2009-01-10 Road Trip for the Dogs

Well, it was bound to happen sometime. The dogs got to go on a road trip to Santa Barbara and Carpinteria.

This is the first time we have taken the little buggers along for the ride. I'm not quite sure how we came to this conclusion. The cats stayed home like always just wondering why there was a huge bowl of food and how come there wasn't any barking.

The trip was also the first time the dogs rode in their crates which probably seemed a little strange since the crates were in the car and not on the ground. An obvious clue that something was amiss. The dogs appeared to be a little anxious about the arrangements. We made a stop in Valencia to give them a breather and time to make bodily evacuations.

Next stop, Santa Barbara. Taylor and Shari toured the Paul Mitchell school while David walked the dogs around the parking lot. We hit Carpinteria looking for a late lunch. Parked the vehicle so we could open the back and let the dogs watch us chow down in an open air patio. The dogs seemed to be okay with this arrangement. We checked into a joint that allowed pets and were quite surprized that it was a normal room with no pet smells.

The dogs understood the concept of a room and were very happy to be out of the vehicle. Later, we took the mutts to the bluffs for a walk which is where they realized there were other dogs in the world and some of them were really, really big. Nobody got gobbled up although there were a few close calls.

Back to the room for the night. When bedtime came, the dogs understood it was time for a little shut-eye and there was very little whining about the new surroundings.

The next day, we took the four-leggers to Toro Canyon County Park where there is a large fenced in pasture that the dogs could run without a leash. We've been to this park several times and rarely see anyone else. Of course, this is the park David spent about twenty minutes trying to wash poison oak oil off his legs and ankles several years ago. Didn't work.

After the park, we packed the critters up and headed for Bakersfield. Of course, there is a whole bunch more, but, this is a reminder for David. The main thing learned on this trip was that it is very difficult to shoot photos and hold a vibrating leash.
