Most video cards and monitors have several options for screen size which can be changed by the user. Common resolutions include 640 x 480, 800 x 600, 1024 x 768, 1152 x 864 and 1280 x 1024. These equate to the number of horizontal pixels x the number of vertical pixels.
Note: Your monitor and display adapter determine whether you can change your screen area size (resolution).
Right-click method
An easy method to change the screen area size (resolution) is to click the right mouse button in an empty area of the Desktop and choose Properties on the pop-up context menu that appears. When the Display Properties dialog appears, choose the Settings tab. On the lower right side of the dialog, you will notice an area called Screen Settings and a slider control. Move the slider control to a new position to change your screen area size.
After changing your screen area size, click the Advanced button. A dialog should come up with information about your video card. Click the General tab. Notice under the Compatibility section that you have three options concerning what Windows should do after you have changed the screen area size. If you make a change, click the Apply button. Click the Apply button on the Diplay Properties dialog Settings tab.
Depending on your choices on the Advanced Display Properties dialog, your computer will now change the area size of your screen.
Start button method
You can also open the Display Properties dialog box at the Settings tab by clicking Start, pointing to Settings, clicking Control Panel, double-clicking Display, and then clicking the Settings tab.
Desktop jumble
After changing your screen area size, you may find that your Desktop has rearranged itself and some folders, icons or shorcuts are off-screen. Don't worry, right-click on the taskbar, select either the Cascade Windows or Tile Windows (Horizontally or Vertically) option.
I don't like the screen size change
Not a problem! Just go through the procedure for changing the screen area size again and pick another resolution.
For more information on glossary terms, click the Windows Start button and choose Help. Select the Index tab and type in screen or resolution as a keyword. It's that simple!
