Wyatt Earp In Bakersfield?
February 5, 1994
The lawman from Tombstone, Arizona; Dodge City, Kansas, and other Western towns, speculated in oil and made frequent trips to Bakersfield to look after interests in the Kern River and Kern Front fields. The late Bakersfield resident Lawrence Weill recalled seeing Earp at various times in Bakersfield. The records are hazy as to what particular lease or leases Earp held interest in at Kern River, but it is known that he owned interest in the Lehnhardt lease in the nearby Kern Front field. Like most oilmen, Earp knew what it was like to realize less than he had hoped for. In a letter to a friend, he described a particular well that apparently came in at a small rate, "I am somewhat disappointed. I was in hopes they would bring in a 200 or 300 barrels a day well. But I must be satisfied as it could have been a duster, too." Wyatt Earp died in 1929, with his boots on.
