The West Coast Goes Dark
August 10, 1996

We are 100% moved to the new/old house and most of it was done in three days! Boxes are scattered around allowing minimal navigation. The refrigerator's making ice, washer and dryer are running, TV's on and the computer is working. Our hardhats are off to Adamson Electric for the use of their flatbed truck, the "Pink Lady". The hydraulic lift gate was a real help. August 10, 1996 will go down in history! Bakersfield day-time temperatures reached 108 ºF, the Seibold's moved and the power went out at 3:40PM PST across the Western US. Hot! No air conditioning, no work!. At 4:30PM we decided to go get something to eat and hope power would be restored. One block from the house, businesses had power. The next block was black. The next block had power. We drove around and finally stopped at Valley Plaza to grab a bite at the Red Robin! The waitress seated us next to a window! Shari and I looked at each other as we began to perspire - we came in here to get away from the heat. We seated ourselves at another table. After dinner we checked out Home Depot and sure enough it was open. We did some more errands and got back to the house at 7:30; almost four hours into the power outage. The kids were staying down the street at Grandma's and since Grandma has a pool, we headed that direction. Had enough of the kids about 9:15 and went back to the house. Shari just happened to have loaded a box with candles and hurricane lamps and squirreled them away in the garage. So, finding the box in a darkened garage was easy. Got the candles and lamps lit and decided to put a few screens back on the windows and possibly catch some cooler air about 3:00 am. We came to the first bedroom window and started to lift the screen into place. The power came back on at that moment. I turned to Shari and asked her why she hadn't suggested screens earlier; we might have cut the outage by a few hours. That's when Shari informed me that while she was packing the box of candles and lamps, she thought to herself, "we won't be needing these". And there is the reason the power outage happened! It was too late to get lotto tickets, so I'll have Shari down there for the next game.
