WHERE THEY COME FROM
The Black Widow female lays approximately 250 eggs in an egg sac which is about 1/2 to 5/8 inch in diameter. The female seems to prefer ceiling spaces located over Drafting offices. The eggs hatch in 20 days and remain in the egg sac from about 4 days to 1 month. The young spiders then molt to the second stage and begin feeding. As the young spiders grow, they construct a loosely woven web and capture progressively larger prey. Draftsmen appear to rank high on the preferred food list. Male spiders molt 3 to 6 times before maturing. The females molt 6 to 8 times and occasionally eat the males after mating. Generally, the females are not aggressive unless agitated, although they are prone to bite when guarding an egg sac or landing on the head of a Draftsman.

WILL THEY HURT ME?
Black widow venom is a nerve toxin and its effects are rapid. The victim suffers painful rigidity of the abdomen and usually a tightness of the chest. Blood pressure and body temperature may rise and sweating, localized swelling, and nausea may occur. In about 5% of the bite cases, the victim may go into convulsions in 14 to 32 hours and die if not given medical attention. First aid for black widow spider bites involves cleaning the wound and applying ice packs to slow absorption of venom. Victims should seek medical attention promptly. Most black widow spider envenomizations respond to intravenous administrations of calcium gluconate or calcium salts. An antivenin is also available for severe cases.
